Effective date (VA claims)

The date a VA benefit legally begins — and what back pay reaches back to.

A VA award's effective date is generally the later of when entitlement arose or when VA received the claim. Compensation is paid from the first day of the month after the effective date, which is why the gap to the decision date becomes retroactive back pay.
